Essay contest deadline set
09/01/2004
The Spring Branch Multicultural Fest and Parade has set Nov. 12 as the deadline for entries in the second annual essay contest for seventh-graders that will award $500 in gift certificates for the winning writer and a like amount in cash for his or her school.

This year's theme is "How different cultures and their influences have enriched our community."

Entries must be from 1,200 to 2,000 words, double-spaced and submitted both electronically and in printout form. Each entry must include a bibliography showing source material.

The writer of the first place essay will receive $500 in gift certificates from Memorial City Mall and his or her school will receive a $500 check from Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market, 7960 Long Point.

Second prize is $300 in gift certificates for the student and $300 cash for the school and third prize is $200 in gift certificates for the student and $200 cash for the school.
The prizes will be awarded at the 2004 Posada, scheduled in December in the Wal-Mart parking lot.
Last year, Lauren Pryzant of Memorial Middle School won first place. Jordan Phillips of Memorial Middle School was second, and Laura Bergesen of Spring Forest Middle School was third. Danny Sourpheth of Westchester Academy for International Studies received an honorable mention award.
Students may obtain additional information at their schools.
