The Spring Branch Multicultural Fest
and Parade has set Nov. 12 as the deadline for entries in the
second annual essay contest for seventh-graders that will
award $500 in gift certificates for the winning writer and a
like amount in cash for his or her
school.
This
year's theme is "How different cultures and their influences
have enriched our community."
Entries
must be from 1,200 to 2,000 words, double-spaced and submitted
both electronically and in printout form. Each entry must
include a bibliography showing source material.
The
writer of the first place essay will receive $500 in gift
certificates from Memorial City Mall and his or her school
will receive a $500 check from Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market,
7960 Long Point.
Second prize is $300 in gift
certificates for the student and $300 cash for the school and
third prize is $200 in gift certificates for the student and
$200 cash for the school. The prizes will be awarded at the
2004 Posada, scheduled in December in the Wal-Mart parking
lot. Last year, Lauren Pryzant of Memorial Middle School
won first place. Jordan Phillips of Memorial Middle School was
second, and Laura Bergesen of Spring Forest Middle School was
third. Danny Sourpheth of Westchester Academy for
International Studies received an honorable mention
award. Students may obtain additional information at their
schools.
