Parade needs participants
Spring Branch multicultural event seeks volunteers, float
entriesBy CHRIS FERRELL Chronicle

Organizers of the Spring Branch Multicultural Parade are
confident this year's event will match or even exceed the inaugural
one — they just wish people were not waiting so long to sign up.
Volunteers, sponsors and entries still are needed for the Oct. 2
parade, which is aimed at bringing all races and backgrounds within
the Spring Branch community together, said Catherine Barchfeld,
parade director.
"We have several groups that have expressed interest. They just
haven't gotten their registration turned in yet," Barchfeld
said.
Last year's parade drew more than 90 floats and 1,200 spectators,
making it one of the largest area parades held outside Houston, said
Victor Alvarez, the group's chairman and parade founder.
Alvarez said organizers would like to exceed those totals and see
the event become one of the largest in the Houston area.
That only will happen with more time and money from the
community, he said.
Alvarez said volunteers are needed to handle every task from
assisting at the start and finish of the route, to decorating the
awards stage to dropping posters at businesses.
They also are looking for individuals who can help with the 2005
event.
"If they want to help, we've got something they can do," Alvarez
said.
Any money raised by the committee will be invested into the
community, he said.
VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED A reception for volunteers who have signed
up and those interested in working on the parade will be Friday,
6-8:30 p.m. at Bayou City Wings, 7922 Long Point Road. Volunteers
and sponsors are welcome until Oct. 2, the day of the
parade.
